  • Purchased this oven from Sears after looking online. They had it for 129.00 and you could get 2 year protection for 9.99, if anything went wrong just bring it into the Sears service center near you. Since I did read that someone had a problem with the unit, I decided the 10 bucks was worth it. I have a complete stainless kitchen and this oven really added to the clean look when replacing my 10 year old Panasonic from my college days that broke down. The looks really does make the unit look high end like a Jenn-Air or comparable.

I really like the dial for adding and subtracting minutes compared to a keypad. Keypads don’t have a clean look and get all fingerprint-y. Some people complained that you can only add in 10 second intervals, but if you just need 5 seconds put it to ten, watch it for 5 seconds and open the door. seriously, what are you going to do in 5 seconds? do you really need an alarm to tell you “hey 5 seconds is up!”. I think the trade off is worth it.

The browning feature is pretty cool, it’s like setting your toaster oven on broil. great for pizza and garlic bread, etc. It’s like having a microwave and broiler in one.

I was impressed with the overall build of the unit, very sturdy and solid feeling. A lot of companies skimp on the stainless only making the front etc. with the material. This unit is covered and very commercial grade stainless. The 1000 power and 1.3 size make this a very attractive purchase.

  • This microwave looks just as clean in real life as it does on the internet. It has nice controls and is easy to work. The only problem is that the dial only goes in 10 second increments which can be annoying sometimes when you are melting, etc. Otherwise, it works quite well and looks good on the counter.

  • GE Stainless Steel 1.3 cu. ft. 1100 Watts Countertop Microwave With top-browning capability JES1384SF

While this attractive mid-priced GE microwave would heat food, there were two out of the box factory defects:

    1. The rotating glass turntable would only occasionally turn, and when it did there was a scraping sound. Inspection revealed the mechanical clearances beneath were inadequate, allowing the turntable plate to drag.

    2. The control knob was intermittent, had to be turned very slowly to work, and when it did, successive display values were erratically incremented.

If you do not need a turntable or control knob, there are cheaper microwaves available. If you do want this or a similar model, suggest you check it before acceptance.

  • Ben:

The microwave itself seems to be OK. Had it about a year and it still works OK. The top brown feature is a mostly useless gimmick.

I bought it because I figured with the dial it would be easy to set like microwaves of the 1980s, boy was I wrong. The user interface on this microwave is half baked and simply awful. It’s inconsistent as can be. To start the microwave you turn the dial to the time and hit start. Simple enough, right? It’s cooking now and I want to add another minute to the cook time. No problem, just turn the dial. Oh wait, while it’s running the dial doesn’t do anything! Instead there’s tiny little “+ Time” “- Time” buttons. To add a minute you have to press the tiny + Time button SIX TIMES! Or you can open the microwave, hit CLEAR, close it and set the time again with the dial. An incredible hassle just to add a minute to cooking time. Why in the world couldn’t the dial just be turned to add time? It makes no sense at all.

OK, I’m cooking again, and need to add time. This time hitting the + Time button DOES NOTHING! Why? Because I’m using it in quick mode. For whatever reason while in quick mode, the only way to add time is to HIT THE START BUTTON AGAIN! This adds 30 seconds. Ordinarily while cooking the start button does nothing. Why in the world is this set up like this?

Alright, time to defrost some meat. I hit power level, it comes up asking the power level I want to use. No problem, I just turn the dial. Oh wait, that CANCELS THE POWER LEVEL MODE!!! WHY?? Do I hit the more/less buttons? No, that does nothing. I have to press the power level button over and over and over again until it shows the power level mode I want. Oops, I passed over it, keep hitting it until it cycles back around like setting a dimestore digital watch. Unbelievable.

OK, so I finally have it working. BEEP BEEP BEEP. My food is done. Let me just finish what I’m doing and I’ll grab it. BEEP BEEP BEEP … BEEP BEEP BEEP… incredible. AFTER THE MICROWAVE STOPS IT KEEPS BEEPING FOREVER UNTIL SOMEBODY GOES OVER AND OPENS IT. I checked the book, there’s no way to turn off that “feature”.

Every single day I regret buying this microwave.

  • Why did I buy this microwave. Simple I had bought a Cuisinart toaster oven and Belgian waffle maker both in stainless and the 6 year old white GE simply looked out of place sitting between those two and my commercial sized stainless steel Bunn. Whew I am sure my former High School teacher would be sending me to the office after that compound mess.

This is simply a great looking totally stainless steel exterior appliance. The door hinge matched up with the look of the new appliances and the actual buttons and timing dial gives this microwave a look that appears that it should cost about five times what I paid for it.

Waited thirty days to write just to make sure got past any obvious manufacturing defects and it is working great. All heating functions are spot on and a short turn of the timing dial instead of punching in some overseas phone number on a keypad is so intuitive and simple.

My last GE, as mentioned, was retired in full working condition after six years because it no longer fit the decor. This one appears to be able to continue that tradition.

Only giving four stars because reliability can’t be verified and one minor complaint. That compliant is that the top it too flexible. I sometimes will put a small appliance or some decorative piece on top and this top is not as secure as the older model.
